About the distillery

Yoichi Distillery, Founded in 1934 by the Masetaka Taketsuru. Masetaka owned the distillery under the company he formed Dai Nippon Kaju. The distillery was founded after Masetaka left Yamazaki Distillery in 1929 and went on to constructed Yoichi in 1934 where production began in 1936. In 1940 Yopichi released its first whisky. In 1952 Masetaka renamed his company to The Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. In 1961 Masetaka’s Wife passed away who he had met when in Scotland whilst learning the trade of Distilling Whisky, in her honour he perfected The Super Nikka and released it later that year. In 1969 he went onto build the Miyagikyo Distillery to work alongside Yoichi although distanced apart. Unique to Yoichi distillery the techniques used at the distillery since 1936 are still used today. In 1979 Masetaka Taketsuru passed away, he will be forever known as a huge member to bring whisky to Japan.
