Cider Cask Project
The first release in Glen Moray's 'Curiosity Series', this whisky was aged in casks previously holding cider. While this has been done in other countries, this project was a first for Scotch, a category governed by strict rules put down by the Scotch Whisky Association. As the casks were initially sent to a cider company by the distillery and then returned, the release was technically allowed as the collaboration is similar to that between distilleries and beer brewers. Released in 2018, this UK exclusive release from Glen Moray was a small batch run of only 2000 bottles.
About the distillery
Glen Moray, region Speyside, located in Elgin was founded in 1897 by Robert Throne & Sons. The distillery ran un-maintained and became run down eventually closing in 1910. In 1923 the Glenmoragnie Distillery Company Ltd purchased the distillery. The distillery was never considered a big player in the industry and was never considered to be near the class of Glenmorangie who had sold the Glenmorangie distillery in 1918. It was then considered a low budget single malt distillery. La Martiniquaise acquired the distillery in 2008, Glen Moray is now considered to produce excellent single malt whiskies and has rebuilt the reputation the distillery deserves.
